EBC Part 4, Surke-Namche Bazar-Tengboche.

Friday 3rd May 2013.

This is an easy day of small ups and downs we take the lower path and bypass Lukla. We were due to stop at Phakding but that would of meant finishing at 10.30am so we carry on to Monjo. The next morning we get great views of Thamserku from behind the town.

Saturday 4th May 2013.

Just before you leave Monjo you have to give up NR3000 to enter the Sagarmatha National Park through this Tibetan style entrance with prayer wheels.

The path then descends steeply.....

The mules have been replaced by the much hardier yak. And you definitely want to step aside and let them pass first!

The last hour and a half was very steep steps and after another checkpoint we round a corner and into Namche. We're all pleased as we've reached our first target point and tomorrow is a rest day. A day we don't have to re-pack a rucksack and leave.

Saturday is market day here....

Naturally I'm awake as early as ever but the views from my bedroom window are worth it.

Monday 6th May 2013.

Monday morning and it's back to work. We leave with a moderate climb from the opposite side of town and pick up the trail again and before long we are treated to our first proper views of what we've come for.

The trails are much wider and in better condition here.

Looking back towards Namche.

We climb steeply to finish at Tengboche at 3870M and I have a slight headache and my fingertips feel tingly and remain so for about an hour, surely the first signs of  some altitude issues.

After a Dal bhat and a large pot of lemon tea I feel good again and take a stroll up behind Tengboche gaining 200M. This is a good thing to do as you introduce your body to a higher altitude but go back down to sleep.

The owner of the lodge brought out this scrapbook for us to look at. The man pictured is his wife's father who worked on the Everest expedition of 1953.

There is a Buddhist monastery here and we went in for the daily 15.00 service.

And of course it was up early for the sunrise shots. In the centre left is Everest and just beside it is Lhotse and on the right is Ama Dablam.
